Self defence and threat management training

Awareness. Knowledge. Skills.
Empowerment New skills For all levels |

Based in Far North Queensland, Epsilar offers training in practical self defence, including specifically designed courses for women. We teach you how to take control of your safety through situational awareness, a self defence mindset, and practical physical skills.

Self Defence

Epsilar provides unarmed self-defence training and workshops for all levels. Training is founded on years of experience in applied threat management, ranging from protecting human rights activists in Cambodia to the training of US Embassy staff in East Africa, to the worldwide provision of Close Personal Protection.

Our courses include specific female-oriented training, because girls and women often experience attacks and violence in a very different way from men.

Our programs are relaxed, cater for all levels of fitness and experience, and you will come away with new mental and physical skills designed to help keep you safe. Please see our FAQ section and Course page for more information.

From very beginner level to those considering a professional security role, including close protection, we’ve got you covered.

Close Quarter Combat

These courses are for anyone, but are more geared toward non-gender specific violence. They teach the use of techniques specifically for violent encounters. Techniques include strikes, throws & takedowns, and how to extract yourself. These courses teach mindset, and a range of scenario-based, physical skills.

Women's Self Defence

Women are too often subject to targeted assault, both at home and in the street. This course is designed for those who want to learn critical elements of self defence. You will come away understanding the power of mindset, and steps to avoid being targeted. You will also learn very practical physical skills that will enable you to react to a situation.

Advanced

These seminars are for those with at least 3 years of martial or other fighting skills, combat military background or those with existing Close Protection qualifications. These seminars teach advanced physical skills, in a range of scenarios. They challenge rules-based training, and provide some background in advanced threat management planning.

Over 30 years of training and experience

Self-defence is not a one-size-fits-all thing. There are various elements of defending yourself against an attacker or multiple attackers. There are no rules in a violent or sexual assault, but there are principles and techniques that are powerful and can help you survive.

Your mind is one of your most important weapons. If you gear it for survival, the likelihood of that is high. And there are other tools too that everyone can use. How you walk and talk, and how you learn to recognise danger, are critical.

And you need to be able to respond physically. What do you do in a road rage attack, or an attempted abduction? How do you prevent an attack from proceeding? At an advanced level, how do you best manage multiple attackers or change the environment in your favour?

Our goal is to empower people to defend themselves better. Combining years of traditional martial arts, close-quarter combat training, and extensive threat management in complex environments, Fiachra Kearney delivers seminars and training on applied self-defence, from complete beginner to advanced levels.
